Oriel 2027 walkthrough

Be ready to start at 10:00 on Thursday 22 October 2026, but don't make opening morning the first time you look for a certificate or ask a referee for their current details. Round 1 stays open for four weeks. That sounds generous until a CREST problem, a missing answer or an unfamiliar priority-status question takes a week out of it.

The confirmed dates in one place

These are the national Round 1 milestones. The NHS England recruitment timelines page is the live version to check against your calendar.

Before applications open

Start with the current person specification and application guidance for each specialty you may apply to. Put the documents they ask for in one folder and give the files names you can recognise without opening them. The 16:00 close is the wrong moment to discover that two scans both say "document final".

Foundation competence deserves its own check. If your route requires the Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training, only the 2024 CREST form is accepted. It must be uploaded with the application as one document before the deadline. A single capability recorded as "unable to confirm" makes the application ineligible, and the signatory rules are exact. Deal with that well before Oriel opens, particularly if your signatory is overseas or their registration evidence needs to be included.

Then confirm your referee details. Ask each referee to check what you plan to enter, including an email address they monitor. Keep those details beside your documents so you aren't reconstructing an old post or searching an inbox while completing the form.

You also need a settled list of specialties you are genuinely willing to pursue. A speculative application still creates messages, deadlines and later decisions. Read the recruitment page for each one now and keep its link. The national dates tell you the outside edges of the round; the specialty page will eventually supply the smaller dates inside it.

The week before applications open

Use 15 to 21 October for a dry run. By the evening before opening, you should be able to tick off:

• the current application guidance and person specification for every intended specialty;
• the requested documents, clearly named and readable, with a completed 2024 CREST form if your route needs one;
• referee details checked with the people concerned;
• the priority categories read against your own qualification, immigration position and qualifying-programme history; and
• calendar alerts for 19 November at 16:00 and the 24 November status-review cutoff at 17:00.

Then leave opening morning for the form itself. It is much easier to read Oriel carefully when you aren't also waiting for somebody to send the document that decides whether the application is eligible.

When the form opens on 22 October

You don't book the MSRA separately when Oriel opens. You apply to a specialty first. Its recruitment office checks the application and later sends the selection instructions that apply to that specialty.

Work through the form in order, but don't assume a familiar question has the same consequence as last year. Read the declaration behind every answer and match dates and names to your documents. Where a specialty requests evidence at application, attach the requested file to that application. Where evidence comes later through a specialty portal, note that as a later task instead of uploading something into an unrelated field.

The main change for 2027 is automated priority-status determination. The application form collects the information used to decide your status, including the country of your primary medical qualification, your immigration status, and completion of or enrolment in a qualifying programme. Oriel then displays the status it has determined.

That result needs a deliberate check. Prioritisation applies from shortlisting through offers in 2027, so an incorrect status can affect the application before interview. If the displayed status is wrong, the review request must reach NHS England by 17:00 on 24 November 2026. That is before shortlisting, and late requests will not be considered. Don't wait for an MSRA invitation or an interview message before raising it.

At the time of writing, regulations for a possible additional 2027 group based on significant NHS experience and/or immigration status were due in early autumn 2026 but had not been published. NHS England says the immigration statuses used for prioritisation in 2026 "will not automatically apply" in 2027. Check the live wording again when the form opens.

Submit early enough to inspect what Oriel records, including the priority status and every uploaded document. An earlier submission leaves time to notice that the file you meant to attach is still on your desktop.

The close at 16:00 on 19 November

Round 1 closes at 16:00 on Thursday 19 November 2026. The application must already be complete by then, so press the final button well before the clock reaches 16:00. CREST, where required, belongs inside the submitted application. It cannot be rescued by emailing or posting it afterwards.

Once the form is submitted, keep watching Oriel and the email account attached to it. The next messages do not all arrive on one national date.

After submission, each specialty sets the pace

Every recent cycle has run through the same broad per-specialty sequence: MSRA invitation, MSRA test window, interview invitations, an evidence portal where that specialty uses one, then interviews. Some specialties omit stages. The standing published selection rule for GP ST1 and Core Psychiatry CT1 is MSRA-only. NHS England's GP overview says a later face-to-face or virtual Selection Centre assessment "will not occur". What remained unpublished on 3 August 2026 were the 2027-specific specialty timetables and person specifications.

NHS England had not published the 2027 MSRA invitation dates, test windows, interview-invitation dates or evidence-portal dates by 3 August 2026. Each specialty or recruitment office sets those sub-dates. Use the national recruitment timelines page as your starting point, then follow the current timeline for every specialty you entered. A date from another specialty's group chat is not your deadline.

Where an application has an interview, it will sit inside the published interview and selection bracket from 11 January to 2 April 2027. The bracket does not tell you which day belongs to Radiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology or another specialty. Until your recruitment office publishes the date, any day quoted elsewhere is a guess.

Keep a separate line in your calendar for each application. One specialty may be sending an evidence-portal instruction while another is still dealing with the MSRA. Read the sender and specialty name before acting, especially if you applied to more than one.

How holds and upgrades work

Initial offers are released in rank order through Oriel by 17:00 on Tuesday 6 April 2027. Once an offer appears, you normally have 48 hours to respond. Weekends are excluded from that clock; bank holidays are included. If you do nothing before the clock expires, the offer expires with it.

A hold without upgrades keeps that offer until the hold deadline without asking Oriel to move you to a more preferred available option. A hold with upgrades keeps it while leaving you eligible for an automatic upgrade. Oriel acts on that choice, using the preference order you submitted.

You can hold only one offer at a time. If you hold a second offer, Oriel automatically rejects the first. That rule matters when applications from different specialties are moving together. Selecting hold on the second changes the position you already had.

The hold deadline is 09:00 on Friday 9 April 2027. By then, a held position needs the response required by Oriel. If upgrades remain selected, they are applied automatically until 16:00 on Wednesday 14 April. There is no advance contact asking whether you would still like the higher preference. Watch Oriel, but make the original preference order on the assumption that an available upgrade can happen without a phone call.

The final hierarchical deadline is 16:00 on Thursday 15 April 2027. It ends the national Round 1 offer hierarchy. An expired 48-hour response or the earlier hold deadline still governs the offer that was in front of you.
