Oriel 2027 walkthrough

Applications open at 10:00 on Thursday 22 October 2026 and stay open for four weeks. Opening morning is too late to begin looking for a certificate or asking a referee for their current details. A CREST problem, a missing answer or an unfamiliar priority-status question can take a week out of that window.

Round 1 runs from 22 October to 15 April

Preparation starts before Oriel opens

The current person specification and application guidance for each specialty you may apply to set the requirements. Keeping the requested documents in one folder, with filenames you can recognise without opening them, makes the application easier to check. Two scans called "document final" are difficult to distinguish at the 16:00 close.

Foundation competence is a separate eligibility check. If your route requires the Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training, only the 2024 CREST form is accepted. It must be uploaded with the application as one document before the deadline. A single capability recorded as "unable to confirm" makes the application ineligible, and the signatory rules are exact. Those checks can take longer if your signatory is overseas or their registration evidence has to be included.

An application also relies on current referee details. Each referee can confirm what you plan to enter, including an email address they monitor. Keeping those details beside your documents avoids reconstructing an old post or searching an inbox while completing the form.

Each speculative application creates messages and deadlines, and later decisions follow even if you are not genuinely willing to pursue the specialty. The recruitment page for each specialty supplies its current detail. Keeping that link with your application notes separates the specialty's smaller dates from the national dates at the outside edges of the round.

An optional checklist before Oriel opens

Oriel does not prescribe a dry run, but an optional pre-opening checklist can cover:

• the current application guidance and person specification for every intended specialty;
• the requested documents, clearly named and readable, with a completed 2024 CREST form if your route needs one;
• referee details checked with the people concerned;
• the priority categories read against your own qualification, immigration position and qualifying-programme history; and
• calendar alerts for 19 November at 16:00 and the 24 November status-review cut-off at 17:00.

With those pieces settled, opening morning can be reserved for the form itself. Oriel is easier to read carefully when every document that decides eligibility is already available.

The form determines your priority status

An Oriel application to a specialty comes before the MSRA; there is no separate MSRA booking when the form opens. The specialty's recruitment office checks your application and later sends the selection instructions that apply to it.

A familiar question may have a different consequence from last year. Any mismatch between the declaration behind an answer and the dates or names in your documents leaves conflicting information in the application. Evidence requested at application belongs on that application. Evidence sent later through a specialty portal remains a later task; uploading it to an unrelated field does not fulfil that request.

The main change for 2027 is automated priority-status determination. The application form collects the information used to decide your status, including the country of your primary medical qualification, your immigration status, and completion of or enrolment in a qualifying programme. Oriel then displays the status it has determined.

Under the published 2027 model, prioritisation applies from shortlisting through offers, so an incorrect displayed status can affect the application before interview; our guide to who qualifies for priority in 2027 explains the categories behind that consequence. If the displayed status is wrong, the review request must reach NHS England by 17:00 on 24 November 2026. That is before shortlisting, and late requests will not be considered. Waiting for an MSRA invitation or interview message would miss that deadline.

At the time of writing, regulations for a possible additional 2027 group based on significant NHS experience and/or immigration status were due in early autumn 2026 but had not been published; NHS England's live prioritisation page carries the current rules, including its warning that the immigration statuses used for prioritisation in 2026 "will not automatically apply" in 2027, so the wording may be different when the form opens.

An early submission leaves time to inspect what Oriel records, including your priority status and every uploaded document. It also leaves time to notice that the file you meant to attach is still on your desktop.

Applications close at 16:00 on 19 November

Round 1 closes at 16:00 on Thursday 19 November 2026. The application must already be complete by then; leaving the final button until 16:00 puts the submission at risk. CREST, where required, belongs inside the submitted application. It cannot be rescued by emailing or posting it afterwards.

After submission, later instructions arrive through Oriel and the email account attached to it. They do not all arrive on one national date.

Each specialty sets its own timetable after submission

Every recent cycle has run through the same broad per-specialty sequence: MSRA invitation, MSRA test window, interview invitations, an evidence portal where that specialty uses one, then interviews. Some specialties omit stages. At the time of writing, the published selection rule for GP ST1 and Core Psychiatry CT1 was MSRA-only. NHS England's GP overview says a later face-to-face or virtual Selection Centre assessment "will not occur". What remained unpublished on 3 August 2026 were the 2027-specific specialty timetables and person specifications.

NHS England had not published the 2027 MSRA invitation dates, test windows, interview-invitation dates or evidence-portal dates by 3 August 2026. Each specialty or recruitment office sets those sub-dates. The national recruitment timelines page provides the starting point. The current timeline for each specialty you entered then gives its deadlines. A date from another specialty's group chat does not apply to your application.

Where an application has an interview, it will sit inside the published interview and selection bracket from 11 January to 2 April 2027. The bracket does not tell you which day belongs to Radiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology or another specialty. Until your recruitment office publishes the date, any day quoted elsewhere is a guess.

A separate calendar line for each application keeps those sub-dates distinct. One specialty may be sending an evidence-portal instruction while another is still dealing with the MSRA. The sender and specialty name identify which application needs action, especially if you applied to more than one.

Holds and upgrades follow your preference order

Initial offers are released in rank order through Oriel by 17:00 on Tuesday 6 April 2027. Once an offer appears, you normally have 48 hours to respond. Weekends are excluded from that clock; bank holidays are included. If you do nothing before the clock expires, the offer expires with it.

A hold without upgrades keeps that offer until the hold deadline without asking Oriel to move you to a more preferred available option. A hold with upgrades keeps the offer and leaves you eligible for an automatic upgrade. Oriel acts on that choice according to the preference order you submitted.

You can hold only one offer at a time. If you hold a second offer, Oriel automatically rejects the first. That rule matters when applications from different specialties are moving together. Selecting hold on the second changes the position you already had.

The hold deadline is 09:00 on Friday 9 April 2027. By then, Oriel requires a response to a held position. If upgrades remain selected, Oriel applies them automatically until 16:00 on Wednesday 14 April. There is no advance contact asking whether you would still like the higher preference, so every preference needs to be one you would accept without a phone call.

The final hierarchical deadline is 16:00 on Thursday 15 April 2027. It ends the national Round 1 offer hierarchy. An expired 48-hour response or the earlier hold deadline still governs the offer that was in front of you.
